‘The Art of the Duello: Italian Grounds and Skies’
Oropesa del Mar, Castellón Province, Valencian Community, Spain

Royal Baroque present 'The Art of the Duello: Italian Grounds and Skies' - a programme of Italian baroque music based on the most common ground basses (La Follia, Ciaccona, La Bergamasca, Passacaglia) as well as the most flamboyant virtuoso sonatas, fea- turing
composers such as Bertali, Uccellini and Vivaldi. The afore mentioned grounds were the pop songs of the day, known by all, and trio sonatas gave the opportunity for instrumentalists to pit their technical and improvisational skills against each other, providing a perfect platform for dramatic sparring and dialogue!

Tuesday 22 October 2019, 6.30-7.30pm

Music Inspired by Fear of Illness in the Pre-Anaesthetic Era
Old Operating Theatre Museum
9A St Thomas Street, London SE1 9RY
Tickets: £20.00

Description:
This experience will be divided into two parts: First, there will be a short overview by Dr Nick Newton of the fear of illness and impending surgery on individuals in the 17th & 18th Century, followed by an introductory talk from Dr Tim Smith, focusing on the aetiology and management of bladder stones in the pre-anaesthetic era.

These brief introductions will set the scene for a concert by the Royal Baroque Ensemble, under the direction of Katarzyna Kowalik, of music composed by Marin, Lully, Froberger, Couperin and Zelenka reflecting the patient's anxieties concerning illness, surgery without anaesthesia and the close encounters with imminent or untimely death. Part of the programme will be the legendary 'Tableau de l'opération de la taille' by Marais - a musical depiction of the stages of an operation for removing a urinary bladder.
